If the mark of a great athlete is how they come back from adversity then Nile Wilson had a 2017 to be proud of. At the start of the year the Leeds gymnast sustained a horrific injury in training, snapping ankle ligaments and spending several months in a cast following surgery. Yet just eight months later he was competing against the best at the World Championships in Montreal. Dismissing any notion that he might ease himself in gently, Wilson finished sixth in the sport’s most demanding competition, the all-around final. When the Olympic bronze medallist spoke after his injury he promised to stay positive and come back stronger. And he’s been absolutely true to his word.
